In her 100th career game, All-American Celeste Trahan collected her 76th career double-double with game highs of 32 points, 16 rebounds along with four blacks and two steals. Joyce Freeman contributed 16 points as the only other ECSU player in double figures. Despite those efforts and that of their tenacious teammates, the Lady Vikings fell to the Lady Broncos Saturday. Fayetteville State University sophomore guard Shacovia Sheppard rejected a Courtney Scott jumper as time expired to lift the Lady Broncos past Elizabeth City State University 75-73 Saturday at the R.L. Vaughan Center. A close game throughout the afternoon, three of the contest’s twelve tie markers came in the final four and a half minutes of play. After a Leticia Dickson jumper gave the Lady Broncos a 74-71 lead with 2:26 remaining, the Lady Vikings’ Celeste Trahan countered with a lay-up on the opposite end trimming the lead to one (74-73). FSU (9-7, CIAA 6-2) had several opportunities to ice the game at the free throw line in the final two minutes but managed only 1 of 8 shots from the charity stripe, the one conversion coming from Jamara McMillan with 17 ticks left to set the score at 75-73. After a missed free throw and a violation by Sheppard, with no time outs ECSU had to drive the length of the court for a chance to tie the game. However, Sheppard redeemed her miscues at the free throw line blocking Scott’s running jumper and securing the defensive rebound as regulation expired. Leticia Dickson scored 31 points to lead the Lady Broncos. ECSU (7-8) will hit the road to complete their season series with Lincoln (PA) University on Tuesday, January 22nd. Game time is slated for 6 pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
