The Elizabeth City State volleyball team continued their winning ways by defeating the Chowan University Hawks in four sets (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20) Tuesday night at the RL Vaughan Center. The Lady Vikings, who last dropped a match on September 9th, have now reeled off 11 straight victories. Tuesday night’s game was a defensive showcase with the two teams combining for 22 total team blocks. Chowan had 12 assisted blocks and a solo block by Antoinette McCollough while ECSU amassed an astounding 22 assisted blocks with solo contributions from Xie’Ara Maybank-Smallings (2), Samarri Griffin and Chelsea Amick. The Lady Hawks totaled more kills than ECSU (45-39) but also had more errors (34-23), most likely due to the Lady Vikings’ team blocking effort at the net. Eva Johnson was the only Lady Viking who tallied double figures in kills with 10. Victoria Lewis and McCollough had 15 and 10 kills respectively to lead Chowan. The Lady Hawks drop to 11-8 on the year. ECSU (15-6) will take their win streak on the road for the next two matches. First they will take on Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Thursday, October 2 and will wrap up their season series with division rival Bowie State on Friday, October 3.
