ECSU researchers receive new satellite receivers from SeaSpace Corporation

January 08, 2013 Research and training in ECSU’s Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) will greatly be enhanced this year thanks to the arrival of a three new satellite receivers. SeaSpace Corporation has been leading the remote sensing ground station business for 30 years. SeaSpace has installed more than 500 ground stations and processing systems in over 47 countries. SeaSpace pioneered low-cost satellite ground station technology. SeaSpace personnel are subject matter experts in the fields of meteorological, oceanographic, and environmental remote sensing. This effort establishes and supports a TeraScan Remote Sensing training facility at ECSU to service SeaSpace customers and clients on the east coast with training on TeraScan server and user software and applications. The ECSU facility will include a 2.4m X/L Polar Orbiter antenna system, a 5.0m Geostationary L-Band antenna, a 3.7m C-Band antenna and their associated acquisition and processing servers. ECSU has had an ongoing relationship with SeaSpace since in 2003. That relationship brought experts to campus to deliver informative lectures for ECSU students. In addition, students witnessed demonstrations met fellow researchers who use SeaSpace products. SeaSpace has been essential to the developments of students, staff and faculty at CERSER. The goal of CERSER is to develop and implement innovative and relevant education and research collaborations focused on ice sheet, coastal, ocean, and marine research. October 21-24, 2012, representatives from Elizabeth City State University attended SeaSpace’s 20th International Remote Sensing Conference in Coronado, California. The theme of this conference was &quotBuilding the Bridge to the Next Generation of Remote Sensing Satellites.&quot Attendees learned about current and future direct broadcast satellites, and they observed an introduction to the new Apex high resolution ground systems and products. Dr. Linda Hayden, director of the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER), ECSU researchers Dr. Malcolm LeCompte, and Mr. Je’aime Powell. Hayden and Powell delivered presentations during the conference. Chancellor Willie Gilchrist presented his congratulations to SeaSpace via video and two past interns from ECSU, Andrew Brumfield and Autumn Luke presented their experiences also.
