Students from the local three institutions of higher learning made January 20 a day of service. Their commitment to serving the community was a central part of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., national holiday observance. Students from Elizabeth City State University collaborated with College of the Albemarle and Mid-Atlantic Christian University students, and the Pasquotank County Chapter of NAACP to organize the commemorative march through Elizabeth City streets. The public also joined students at Sheep Harney Elementary School where recently elected City Councilman, Montravias King, provided the speech. The senior at ECSU said he is encouraged by the students’ commitment to community. "Community service is important in our community. Dr. King emphasized the importance of service." King said. "I’ve gone over to the University Archives and seen photos of Dr. King and his family for inspiration. It’s good for us to see those images, read the news clips and learn about this man who didn’t think it was good for one group of people to dominate another." The University Archivist, Jean Bischoff, displayed a collection of photos of Dr. King and his family, a panoramic photo of the funeral procession of the slain civil rights leader and other photos in the G.R. Little Library. The display will be available through the third week of January.
