Hundreds of area school students celebrate math at ECSU

The annual Celebration of Women in Math brought over 400 middle and high school female students to campus for rounds of competitions and awards. Among the winners, River Road Middle School Students, who won First Place in the Math Sprint Competition. That competition was part of the October 14 Women in Math Celebration. The event, held over the last 15 years, consists of a program of workshops, talks, and math competitions for middle/high school girls and their teachers. The purpose of the program is to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics and to raise the level of mathematics competency in northeastern North Carolina. This event is sponsored by the Center for the Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) and the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER). Dr. Linda Hayden, a professor in ECSU’s mathematics and computer science department, is the director of CERSER. She works with a team of ECSU staff, faculty and students to coordinate the event.
