Newspaper series recounts memorable people from ECSU’s past

In a series of articles published in The Daily Advance, Dr. Glen Bowman, professor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences department at Elizabeth City State University, highlights some of the key people whose contributions allowed the institution to advance. Former teachers, professors, alumni, local leaders, state bureaucrats, and a few national figures are mentioned in the series, which began in March 2015 and will continue until the university celebrates its 125th anniversary next March. In addition, Bowman has recently published an historical account of the university titled Elizabeth City State University, 1891-2016: The Continuity of a Historical Legacy of Excellence and Resilience. &quotThe essays have given me a chance to give some important, but now obscure, people the attention they deserve,&quot Bowman said. &quotAll of the essays have one thing in common – they address the past. Most are biographies, and all of the subjects of the essays have passed away.&quot Many of the figures highlighted in Bowman’s account made contributions which are still visible today on the campus of ECSU. Eva Jane Lewis, for example, was a teacher who started the candlelighting ceremony held each fall to introduce freshmen to the university setting.
