WRVS Hosts 2nd Annual High School Football Media Day
For 30 years Elizabeth City State University’s public radio station, WRVS 89.9 FM, has been serving the surrounding community, and on Friday, July 29, 2016, the station, its staff and the ECSU athletic department hosted the 2nd Annual High School Football Media Day.
Held in the conference room on the second floor of the New Student Center, nine regional high school football teams were represented for a press conference. According to production director and on-air host Clay Mercer, and ECSU Athletic Director Derrick Johnson, the teams and their coaches took turns discussing the upcoming season with media representatives.
“WRVS brings together the high schools in the surrounding communities to highlight programs for the coming season,” said Johnson.
The area teams represented at the event were: Pasquotank County High School, Northeastern High School, Camden County High School, Currituck County High School, Perquimans County High School, Edenton-Chowan’s John A. Holmes High School, Hertford County High School, Gates County High School, Bertie County High School, Plymouth High School, and Manteo High School in Dare County.
“Anything you do to promote kids and what they do is really a good thing,” said Camden County High School Head Coach Scott Jones. “It’s nice that they do this for the local high schools.”
Johnson said that it is also an opportunity to bring the region’s high school students onto the ECSU campus, to get to know the university better. It is, he said, great community outreach.
“It lets the kids know they are welcome on the campus,” said Johnson.
Lunch was provided to athletes, coaches, and members of the media.
The success of the event is a clear signal that ECSU is out in the community, bringing people together, and the campus is their campus, too.
